Injected intramuscularly, the new swine flu vaccine has been used successfully in Germany to provide protection against the pandemic flu strain. |
A newly-developed vaccine against swine influenza is being launched in the UK by Hysolv Animal Health UK.
The vaccine, Respiporc FLUpanH1N1, protects against the pandemic strain of flu pdmH1N1(2009) which is particularly prevalent in the British Isles.

There is no doubt if the disease is discovered in a major piglet or pork producing/exporting country such as Denmark, Germany, Spain or the USA, the mortality it causes would be only the beginning of the woes. |
Because African Swine Fever (ASF) is essentially unknown in modern major swine-producing countries, the sense of mystery surrounding the disease is leading to two observable reactions. The first is a slowly developing feeling of impending doom among some, the only question is when will it strike? With others, a seeming sense of invulnerability has fostered a kind of complacency or skepticism like the post-Y2K lesson, “you can’t scare me with big but improbable threats anymore”. Expert commentary however is emerging suggesting that the presence of the virus in China and now spreading within the heart of the EU means that in the span of a year or two we will be engulfed in a worldwide pandemic.

Feeding, biosecurity and concomitant diseases as factors involved in the perpetuation of Salmonella in the farm.
Salmonella spp. is the main zoonosis transmitted by pigs. Pork has traditionally been considered, after poultry and eggs, as the third most frequent cause of salmonellosis in humans. In fact, it is estimated that between 20-40% of cases of salmonellosis are associated with the consumption of pork. Therefore, control in this species is still an unmet need, even more so compared to the success and effectiveness of poultry control programs. Although at the legislative level no action has been taken for years regarding the control of the infection, the pathogen remains relevant, both because of the research being carried out and because of the demands of the industry, that demands a solution to control the disease.

The Swine Health Information Center (SHIC) is watching porcine kobuvirus (PKV) as a possible emerging swine virus posing a valid threat to the US pork industry. Originally detected in 2008 in baby pigs in Hungary, PKV has been detected worldwide including in the US in 2013. SHIC-funded research conducted at Iowa State University resulted The validation process of the PCR resulted in data that suggests PKV is widespread in US swine and additional research is needed to discern if pigs with or without diarrhea are infected with PKV or if different strains of the virus are more likely to cause diarrhea in swine.
PKV infection is most often a mild diarrheal disease with piglets of less than four weeks of age most likely to be infected. Prevalence in domestic pigs ranges from 13 to 99 percent and the virus has been isolated from both healthy and pigs with diarrhea. PKV is endemic in many countries and has been isolated worldwide.
In China, PKV was implicated as the cause of diarrhea, dehydration, and vomiting in piglets which resulted in morbidity of 80 to 100 percent and mortality of 50 to 90 percent, beginning in 2010. In the study summary, the authors say this suggests the emergence of PKV from different geographic regions is detectable using the targets based on the US strains of PKV.
No vaccines or anti-viral treatments have been developed for PKV infection i

Swine Acute Diarrhea Syndrome Coronavirus (SADS-CoV), a coronavirus variant emerging in China, has been on the Swine Health Information Center's (SHIC) radar and, based on information directly from China, new actions are being taken. Affected piglets show morbidity and mortality similar to the effects of PED, which reemerged in China in 2010.
